Peak 80’s Aesthetic Urusei Yatsura Laserdisc Cover Gallery

An incredibly stunning collection of nostalgic late 80’s laserdisc cover art that just hits different.

The year of the tiger is behind us, dah-ling!  To commemorate we recently got our paws on a 2 box set of 50 laserdiscs and were immediately knocked out of our tiger print bikinis by the sheer amount of incredible late 80’s cover art in such a strikingly huge 12″x12″ format.    Let’s not waste your time, here are all 50 covers but if you want to read a bit further I’ll go into detail below with even more photos about how it arrived in it’s original 1987 Urusei Yatsura shipping box, the incredible weight, insane original cost and more!

Which ones are your favourites?

Despite being a huge fan of all things Rumiko Takahashi, I’ve never owned Lum/Urusei Yatsura/Those Obnoxious Aliens in any physical form and being relatively new to the laserdisc game the complete set in this format was just too good to pass up.

To my surprise it arrived in it’s original brown shipping box from 1987 that actually says Urusei Yatsura on the side, and had the inside padding to hold two extremely heavy laserdisc box sets.  How heavy?

FORTY SIX POINT SIX POUNDS!  I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a lot of anime sets that weigh anywhere near that.  I do have actually have one though, believe it or not. (Legend of the Galactic Heroes)

Anyway!

The cover art on both boxes is identical but also really, really cool.  I always love when Rumiko Takahashi manga art uses different hair colours etc…

According to the side art these sets cost a massive 333,000円 each in 1987 dollars.  That’s roughly $4,800US in 1987!  A quick inflation calculator tells me that translates to $12,520US in 2022 dollars.  Remind me to never complain about the price of anime streaming services again.

The 2 sets themselves were not that expensive, but with their massive size and weight, shipping them to North America is really the biggest hurdle if you want to get your hands on a set of your very own.  Even if you found a set in Japan, 50 pounds in either your luggage or carry-on is probably going to be a problem.    I decided to bite the bullet on shipping. It was less than ideal but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

This would probably be a good time to mention like most anime laserdiscs from Japan, they are Japanese language only with no subtitles so you may want to factor that in before going all on on one of these.

Regardless as a showpiece for old school Rumiko Takahashi fans, these boxes and their wonderfully late 80’s aesthetic contents are an amazing piece to have if you can get one.  If not, we hope you’ll enjoy this gallery of all 50 covers.

Our favourites are #1, 11 & 43…but in all honestly 85% of these are just incredible.
